Trend MLearning


One of the trends in instructional technology that I found fascinating is mlearning.  Mlearning is a means of distance instruction using a handheld device.  For me, mlearning is not just about using a mobile device, but it is about creating new forms of pedagogy that facilitates learning that is more personalized, situated, authentic, flexible, and participatory.  For example, there are so many barriers to providing training and support to educators in remote areas and there are so many possibilities for creating formal and informal learning communities using mlearning in these areas. Interestingly, 2/3 of all digital subscribers live in developing countries which indicates a great potential for disciplines, like teacher training, that are needed in under-resourced areas that do not have access to professional development opportunities.

How will it impact learning and education?
In my field of teacher training with non-traditional students, mlearning has really opened my thinking about course delivery as well as about my own philosophies of teaching and learning.  Mlearning focuses on the needs of the learner and provides such quick access to a feedback loop.  It can also focus a lot on the collaboration potential of learning communities across settings that have been routinely isolated.  I think that the challenge of using mlearning is going to be not only in improving access to education but maybe more importantly in exploring how the use of mobile devices is going to create new approaches to learning. I think that new instructional methods will need to explored and I think that our methods will need to become more collaborative and participatory for mlearning to have an impact beyond the benefits of distance learning.

As an instructional technologist, what do you need to do to keep up with this trend?
In order to keep up with this trend, I will need to attend conferences and network with other individuals who are using mlearning.  I met some researchers at a recent technology conference who were funded to develop a mlearning program at a private school in India as well as a researcher in India who was investigating attitudes towards mlearning as part of a dissertation.  I also think I will need to start experimenting myself with mlearning modules in my classes…perhaps during the second summer session with a group of grad students (classroom teachers) in a child development class.  Summer session for teachers has the feeling of summer camp sometimes, and innovative experiences seem to be more readily embraced during July!

This wiki article documented a study of mobile learning combined with other modes of distance education at the Bangladesh Open University.  The developers compared traditional TV programming version of distance learning and a combined TV version and mlearning (SMS).  The interactive aspect of mlearning was the factor that contributed to the enhanced performance of the individuals who were in the combined group.  The combined traditional distance learning materials supplemented by mlearning support a demonstrated in this study would be so beneficial to my rural remote nontraditional students.

This video refers to Roamable projects, and is a professional development approach to supplementing training.  Learners forget much of what is taught in a classroom, yet with a mlearning app that provides real-time solutions to situations where a learner is stymied.  When the learner is stuck, they can pick up their mobile device and can “roam” their way through the lesson to the point where they need immediate assistance.  They can review the information and even contact the trainer to receive input/feedback on the spot.  This would be an incredible approach to supporting first year teachers!

An article that I read reviewed mlearning projects that were underway in several developing countries in Asia.  I enjoyed learning about the specifics of each project as well as the outcomes that each researcher reported.  They all looked into access issues as well as new pedagogy approaches.  For the most part, students in the various studies found (a) the scheduling freedom important in terms of the other responsibilities they had in their lives, (b) the interactivity was enjoyable, and (c) the immediate feedback was very motivating.  This article is important to me in my work with nontraditional students and my interest in international teacher education.

Design one activity using this trend that can be applied for teaching and learning. One way that I want to use mlearning this summer with my class is to collaborate with them in developing an mlearning tool that we could provide to parents regarding common topics or issues in child development.  I think that parents are often busy and sometimes overly busy, and a mlearning option for a “chunk” of interactive parenting education could be one of those “just-in-time” learning experiences.

Trend Wearable Devices

One of the trends in instructional technology that I found applicable to my field of study is wearable technology, particularly in the context of wearable technology for young children.  Wearable technology includes clothing and/or accessories that have embedded sensors.  These sensors are able to connect with devices to record or exchange data.  One typical example includes activity trackers such as smart wristbands (i.e., Fitbits) that record physiological information that can be downloaded to provide feedback during exercise. 

            Wearable technology impacts learning and education in the field of early childhood special education in two specific ways.  First, it is used to provide mechanisms for children with cerebral palsy to use specific head movements to indicate or “point to” letter board responses for the purpose of communication. Cerebral palsy (CP) is one of the most common causes of childhood disability, and often children with CP have typical cognitive abilities yet do not have the motor muscle control to produce speech.  Wearable technology in terms of head-worn pointing sensors results in the opportunity for these children to communicate with the rest of the world using computer-generated voice software.

Another example of wearable technology in the field of special education relates to young children with attention deficit disorder (ADD).  Children with ADD have been fitted with belt-worn ambulatory monitors that collect information about various activity measures including sleep, hyperactivity, and dysregulation of circadian cycles.  These data can help physicians, teachers, and parents monitor the effects of medication as well as other interventions on the child’s physiological markers.

As an instructional technologist, in order to keep up with this trend, I need to interface with manufacturers, teachers, allied health professionals, parents, and the children themselves.  I need to understand the range of devices that are currently available and I need to understand the needs of the target child and his/her family.  I need to understand the needs of the child in the school setting as well as other social settings that are important to the family.  Often at technology conferences there are assistive technology representatives who can provide me with the most current devices available so that I can subsequently pass on this information to schools and families.

I enjoyed reading this blog/article as it introduced some uses of wearable technology for premature infants (breathing patterns regarding apnea and a waking-up device), for children with night terrors (a device that senses breathing patterns and will vibrate to wake a child before the bad dream starts), and a variety of ways that parents can keep track of where their children are “out in the world”.

This article is the one that gave me so much information about apps of wearable technology for children with disabilities.  Sometimes in this very young population it is difficult to make a correct diagnosis based on typical symptoms, so having this activity data would prove invaluable.

The Future of Wearable Technology

This video speaks to the possibilities of wearable technology as enhancing our social awareness, conductive yarn as part of the digital environment, sensors that measure our medical and heath states, as well as a presentation on DIY wearable technology that allows individuals to customize their “outer skin” for their own needs.
One activity using this trend that can be applied for learning for young children with physical disabilities such as cerebral palsy includes monitors (i.e., Lumo Lift Posture Coach) that provide feedback during physical therapy relative to body positioning.  The younger that a child with a physical disability can begin to learn to monitor body positioning, the fewer secondary disabilities will develop.

Social Media Trend

One of the trends in instructional technology that I found very applicable to my interests in teacher training in low resourced setting was social media.  Kaplan and Haenlein (2010) defined social media as “a group of Internet-based applications that build on the ideological and technological foundations of Web 2.0 and that allow the creation and exchange of user-generated content” (p.61).   In teacher education I look forward to using social media, particularly apps like Twitter, to extend my students’ engagement in discussions and subsequently promote a deeper understanding on my part about aspects of activities that might be challenging for my students.


How will social media impact learning and education?  According to articles I have read, social media can increase the quality and quantity of participation in online as well as seated classes.  It can promote collaboration among students.   It could even promote socialization among students of mine who live in rural areas and who may not feel like part of the learning community in online classes.  In another context, social media such as Facebook and/or teacher blogs could be used by teachers for their classes and could provide parents with information and insights about what occurred during their children’s school time.

As an instructional technologist, what do you need to do to keep up with this trend?  To keep up with this particular trend, I think that I would need to schedule time to learn the apps and to teach the relevant apps to students of mine who are non-traditional students.  I would need to read about the ways that other educators are using the tools and perhaps become part of a group of educators who are developing applications to their classrooms.

Blog

This article is interesting to me as it was written by a teacher who was attempting to describe how students use Twitter during in-class back channel activities, outside class discussions and in-class discussions.  He found that one of the most common uses of Twitter was student sarcasm about his teaching and topics—which he used to try to understand the ways that students were engaging with materials.  I liked reading this as it put “snark” into perspective as well as discussed the reality of encouraging students to think “out loud.”

I enjoyed this video because it simply (and comically) presented Twitter as a worldwide connection with educators.  She described what Twitter can be and do for educators, as well as cautioned educators about ways that Twitter could be overwhelming if not used in a focused fashion.

Wang, Y. (2013). Social media in schools: A treasure trove or hot potato?  Journal of Cases in Educational Leadership, 16(1), 56-64.

In this article the author develops some fictionalized case studies of the struggles of administrators in K-12 settings as they attempt to navigate the uses of social media such as Facebook.  The case made clear the struggles of teachers who are excited about the potential of Facebook for not only educational uses but for building relationships with communities.  It also made clear the difficulties faced by administrators who want to support the enthusiasm of their staff and to use the potential of Facebook, but are nervous about unexpected outcomes in the legal areas of personal expression and expression of an institution.  The author noted the existence of different stakeholders who play a role in both the decisions and outcomes for staff and administrators in schools.

An activity using Twitter in teacher education could include an assignment that teachers record short examples of child outcomes in their classroom in response to specific intervention strategies.  The tweets could subsequently be gathered and analyzed by one of the Twitter software apps, and the teachers could quickly
